Burger King Twitter account hacked to show McDonald’s superiority

<span id="intelliTxt">Hacking into systems and servers to play some harmless pranks isn’t anything new, but today Burger King’s <a href="http://www.twitter.com/burgerking" target="_blank">official Twitter account</a>
 was breached and the hackers appeared to be die-hard McDonald’s fans, 
because they ended up changing the page’s branding to the McDonald’s 
logo and name, and mentioned that Burger King “just got sold to 
McDonald’s because the Whopper flopped.”</span><br />

Burger King’s Twitter account, which has almost
 90,000 followers, was made to look like McDonald’s own Twitter feed, 
with a McDonald’s logo and all. The only difference was that the 
username remained unchanged. Many of the tweets beared the hashtag 
“#DFNCTSC”, which seem to suggest that the hackers behind this comical 
trick are a part of the Defonic Team Screen Name Club, who are best 
known for hacking into Paris Hilton’s phone.<br />

The hackers continued to tweet for 30 minutes before the account was 
finally suspended for the time being. Tweets were filled with text, 
photos, and videos that made fun of Burger King and its employees, 
including a couple of tweets mentioning employees doing drugs in the 
bathroom. The rest of the tweets were pretty random and some didn’t 
really make sense.<br />
<br />
Twitter has recently been a huge target for hackers, with over 250,000 passwords leaked
 from a hacker who broke into the service’s servers. This also isn’t the
 first time that verified accounts, and popular Twitter users have been 
targeted. Major League Baseball was recently hacked, as well as the New 
York Yankees account, which made fun of Derek Jeter.<br />
<br />
<b>UPDATE:</b> We’ve received some stats about the hacking 
from Unmetric regarding the Twitter account. The number of followers 
that the account gained jumped from 83,000 to 110,000 within 60 minutes,
 and the hackers sent a total of 55 tweets before the account was 
eventually suspended, 33 of which were either replies or retweets. 
McDonald’s also <a href="https://twitter.com/McDonalds/status/303575465237549056" target="_blank">chimed in on the Burger King hack</a>, assuring users that they had nothing to do with the fiasco.<br />

iOS 6.1.2 rumored for next week to fix lockscreen and Exchange bugs

<span id="intelliTxt">The latest iOS update has certainly seen its fair 
share of bugs and vulnerabilities. First, there were problems with users
 connecting to and syncing with Microsoft Exchange servers, and now there’s the lockscreen exploit
 that allows people to dig into your contacts and photos. However, it’s 
rumored that an update to fix these issues will come as early as next 
week.</span><br />

According to <a href="http://www.iphone-ticker.de/ios-6-1-2-wahrscheinliche-freigabe-noch-vor-dem-20-februar-43915/" target="_blank">German website <i>iPhone-Ticker</i></a>,
 Apple is preparing to release iOS 6.1.2 sometime early next week to 
address the bugs and other issues that they said they would be fixing, 
but the German site is claiming that the update will land sometime 
before February 21, according to the information it has received from 
various carriers.<br />
<br />
While we’re taking this with a grain of salt, it certainly makes 
sense that Apple is planning to push out a quick update soon, and <i>iPhone-Ticker</i>
 even ended up accurately predicting the launch of iOS 6.1.1 through its
 same sources earlier this month. So if the same holds true, we should 
be seeing yet another small update head our way next week.<br />
<br />
Perhaps the bug that got the most attention was the lockscreen 
vulnerability that, with a few clever tap moves, allows breachers access
 to the owner’s contacts and any personal information that the owner has
 for each contact. Plus, by editing a contact and changing the contact’s
 picture, you can access all of the owner’s photos in their library.<br />

Russian meteor injures 500-1,000 in shockwave blast

<span id="intelliTxt">This morning a meteorite has broken up over 
central Russia in a shockwave blast that lit up the sky and caused 
damage to the bodies of 500 citizens nearby. Though this news bit may 
seem like science fiction from the latest blockbuster apocalypse movie, 
it’s the real deal. According to reports from the region, this former 
chunk of space debris was right around the size of a sports utility 
vehicle before it shattered entering the Earth’s atmosphere.</span><br />

Another much larger mass is passing by the 
Earth today in what asteroid expert Richard Binzel of MIT notes is 
almost certainly an unrelated incident. This larger asteroid 
conglomeration called 2012 DA14 is closer in size to a 13-story-sized 
building and will be passing by the Earth nearly 24 hours after the 
Russian mass. 2012 DA14 will pass within 17,000 miles of our planet at 
right around 2:24 PM EST today, February 15th, 2013.<br />

According to Binzel speaking with <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/sciencefair/2013/02/15/russian-meteor-blast/1922219/" target="_Blank">USA Today</a>,
 “we just have the incredible coincidence of this happening just before 
the asteroid flies by.” The Russian meteorite entered Earth’s atmosphere
 and bits crash landed across Chelyabinsk. This little beast has been 
estimated at entering the atmosphere at 33,000 mph and has been 
captured, believe it or not, in a collection of home-made videos filmed

Astronomers will be attempting to recover the bits of matter left by 
the Russian meteor for study as soon as possible. According to a <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/15/us-russia-meteorite-idUSBRE91E05Z20130215" target="_Blank">Rueters</a>
 report, citizens like Viktor Prokofiev saw the heavenly body enter the 
atmosphere clearly: “I was driving to work, it was quite dark, but it 
suddenly became as bright as if it was day. I felt like I was blinded by
 headlights.”</div>

Head of the Emergencies Ministry in Chelyabinsk Yuri Burenko spoke up
 as well, noting the rarity of this type of situation happening in 
Russia: “There have never been any cases of meteorites breaking up at 
such a low level over Russia before.” This same Emergencies Ministry 
described the event as a “meteor shower in the form of fireballs” but 
made it clear that “background radiation levels were normal.”</span></div>

 a partial evacuation was conducted in Chelyabinsk and the police were 
set to high alert. A “Fortress” plan was enacted and “all vital 
facilities of the city were taken under additional protection.” It’s 
also been reported the the area is “currently” being inspected by three 
aircraft and 20,000 EMERCOM personnel. EMERCOM is Russia’s Ministry for 
Emergency Situations.</span></div>

Multinational cybercrime gang arrested in Spain’s Costa del Sol

<span id="intelliTxt">A group of ten criminals have recently been 
arrested in the Costa del Sol area of Spain. These ten are from varying 
countries and are said to have been running a ransomware scam. The 
arrests were made by Europol, the European police agency and follow the 
arrest of the head of the network who was taken into custody last month 
while in Dubai. The head of the network is reportedly from Russia and 
this latest round of ten includes two Ukrainians, two Georgians and an 
additional six from Russia. </span><br />

Regardless of their country of origin though, 
this group is said to have been running their ransomware scam across 
Europe and are believed to have taken in millions of euros. These crimes
 were based on a virus that locks a user’s computer and in turn sends 
them a message that appeared to be a warning from the police. The key 
here, these messages were demanding a sum of €100 to unlock the 
computer.<br />
<br />
Rob Wainwright, the director of Europol was noted as saying that this
 is essentially a mass marketing scam and that “even if only 2 percent 
fall victim to the scam, it is still a very good pickup rate.” He went 
on to say that 3 percent of those targeted in this scam were believed to
 have paid. Wainwright didn’t mention any estimates in terms of dollar 
amounts, however Francisco Martínez, Spain’s secretary of state for 
security believes they collected more than €1 million in Spain alone.<br />
<br />
Dollar amounts aside, an inspector from Spain that helped in the 
investigation said this organization “had a very well-structured and 
complex infrastructure.” In addition to the arrests, police also took 
several computers as well as more than 200 credit cards and €26,000 in 
cash. Those arrested were charged with varying crimes including money 
laundering, fraud and involvement in a criminal organization.<br />

NASA may have found Milky Way’s newest black hole

<span id="intelliTxt">NASA has
 stated that it might have found the Milky Way’s youngest black hole in 
the remnants of an exploding star. Although it isn’t entirely certain 
this is the case, saying that the evidence is “a bit circumstantial”, 
all signs point to such a reality, giving researchers the opportunity to
 study the creation of a black hole from a supernova. </span><br />

NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory made the 
discovery in the remnants of W49B, a thousand-year-old supernova located
 approximately 26,000 light years away. Unlike most stars that collapse,
 exploding outwards in a symmetrical fashion, the W49B appears to have 
exploded along its poles, creating an asymmetrical explosion.<br />
<br />
The remnants of this explosion can be observed in wavelengths and 
x-rays, which shows the evidence indicating an asymmetrical explosion. 
One of its most interesting realities, however, is its lack of a neutron
 star. Typically, the by-product of a supernova is a spinning core 
referred to as a neutron star, which researchers can find using several 
different means.<br />
<br />
When searching for W49B’s neutron star, however, they were presented 
with nothing, indicating the existence of a black hole. If this turns 
out to be the case, it will be a rare find for astronomers, and will 
provide an excellent chance for research into the creation of a black 
hole from a supernova. Says Daniel Castro, one of the co-authors of the 
project, stated: “It’s a bit circumstantial, but we have intriguing 
evidence the W49B supernova also created a black hole. If that is the 
case, we have a rare opportunity to study a supernova responsible for 
creating a young black hole.”<br />

Blackberry’s celebrity director Alicia Keys tweets with iPhone, blames it on hacker

 that Alicia Keys is its new Global Creative Director with the launch of
 Blackberry 10. All was well for a couple weeks until tweets surfaced 
under Keys’ Twitter account from an iPhone, her previous handset of 
choice. According to the singer, she was hacked.</span><br />

As you can see in the screenshot above, Keys 
says that she did not send out the “Started from the bottom now were 
[sic] here” tweet, instead blaming it on being “hacked.” Her 
spokesperson has a different angle to the story, however, insinuating 
that Keys’ posted those tweets before officially “breaking up” with her 
iPhone.<br />

Said Keys’ spokesman Rhett Usry: “The Internet is buzzing with 
speculation as to the exact time Alicia Keys ‘broke up’ with her 
previous smart phone. After a transitional period, she’s officially an 
exclusive BlackBerry 10 user today.” Which is it? We’ll never know, but 
the moral of the story is either to keep your Twitter password secret, 
or be careful when using a handset other than the one you’re supposed to
 exclusively represent.<br />

Hacking highlight: “Sustained attack” on US called out by intelligence report

<span id="intelliTxt">The US is under sustained attack from a vast 
cyber-espionage campaign that, though broadly invisible to the public, 
has the potential to significantly threaten the economic performance of 
the country as a whole, according to a new report. China is the most 
active of the hacking culprits, sources tell the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/us-said-to-be-target-of-massive-cyber-espionage-campaign/2013/02/10/7b4687d8-6fc1-11e2-aa58-243de81040ba_story.html?hpid=z3" target="_blank">Washington Post</a> having
 had privileged access to the new National Intelligence Estimate, but 
are not alone in targeting fields as broad as energy, finance, and 
technology in the hunt for a commercial edge. As well as technological 
methods of defense, the US is also apparently considering more unusual 
strategies to battle the growing number of state-led attacks.</span><br />

Cyber-espionage has grown in prevalence and 
attention over the past few years, and according to one Obama 
administration official – speaking on the understanding of anonymity – 
“it’s known to be a national issue at this point.” China is widely 
believed to lead the field, but Russia, Israel, and France are all 
believed to have been called out by the new report as having “engaged in
 hacking for economic intelligence.”<br />
<br />
China officially denies any government involvement or official 
economic strategy that includes hacking US companies, but the report is 
in accordance with other recent claims that Chinese employees are 
persuaded or coerced to steal content from their US employers or 
partners.<br />
<br />
The NIE holds off from making specific claims about the exact 
potential for financial impact on the US economy, though there is no 
shortage of analyst commentary speculating on anything up to $100bn in 
annual losses.<br />
<br />
Though the National Intelligence Estimate’s findings and 
recommendations are undoubtedly of great interest to US businesses, a 
public release of the report is not on the cards. A spokesperson for the
 department responsible for its authorship has said that there will be 
no unclassified summary, excerpt, or other disclosure, and that “as a 
matter of policy” it will not be publicly detailed.<br />
<br />
However, the US government is expected to release a separate report 
on trade-secrets protection, which will detail ways in which US 
companies can work with legislators and lawmakers to ensure their 
valuable intellectual property is defended. A parallel executive order 
demanding voluntary standards for particularly high-profile 
organizations in the private sector is also tipped for release, 
potentially as early as this week.<br />
<br />
Back in January, meanwhile, the US Cyber Command division – the taskforce that challenges cyber-espionage among other threats – gained new teeth for
 its online war. Three new teams, handling Pentagon infrastructure, 
US-wide infrastructure, and proactive cyber-attack, have been 
formulated, to challenge the growing number of hacking attempts.<br />

After months of hype, Kim Dotcom's successor to his now shut down 
MegaUpload file sharing website is up and running ... barely. As 
chronicled by Dotcom's own Twitter feed, the launch of Mega was 
accompanied by a flood of users trying to sign up for the service.<br />

The actual URL for Mega is <a class="twitter-timeline-link" data-expanded-url="http://Mega.co.nz" dir="ltr" href="http://mega.co.nz/" target="_blank" title="http://Mega.co.nz"><span class="js-display-url">Mega.co.nz</span></a>, and the second the site went live to the public, its servers started crumbling.  <a href="https://twitter.com/KimDotcom">Dotcom's Twitter page</a>
 posted up word, just after Mega went live, "Wow. I have never seen 
anything like this. From 0 to 10 Gigabit bandwidth utilization within 10
 minutes."<br />
<br />
Later, Dotcom claimed that Mega has generated 100,000 user 
registrations less than an hour after it went live. He added in another 
post, "Site is still overloaded. Massive demand. Incredible. I am so 
happy." Indeed, we are still unable to sign up for Mega as of this 
writing.<br />

An hour or so later, Dotcom posted:<br />

While Microsoft gave all of us a heads up several months ago that Windows Live Messenger would soon be retired,
 we now have a definitive end date for the company's online messaging 
client. The company has now sent out emails to the remaining users of 
the program informing them that it will close up shop on March 15th.<br />

<a href="http://thenextweb.com/microsoft/2013/01/09/microsoft-emails-messenger-users-to-let-them-know-the-service-is-retiring-on-march-15-and-to-upgrade-to-skype/">The Next Web received the contents</a>
 of the email, which also confirmed that Windows Live Messenger would 
continue to work in China past March 15th, due to the program's service 
being handled in that country by a third party company. Windows Live 
Messenger will be replaced everywhere else by Skype, which Microsoft 
acquired in October 2011.<br />
<br />
The process for those few remaining users of Live Messenger to transfer
 to Skype should be pretty straightforward. All they will have to do 
before the end date comes is download the latest version of Skype and 
sign on using their Microsoft Account login and password. Their Windows 
Live Messenger contacts should be transferred over to their Skype 
client.<br />
<br />
If you are one of those stubborn people that hate change in their lives
 ... well, too bad. After March 15th, people who keep trying to sign in 
using Windows Live Messenger will be given a notification to download 
and use Skype from then on.<br />

Earlier this week, Canonical teased the world with a countdown clock on its main Ubuntu website,
 with the reveal to be made today. Well, the website got so much traffic
 today it basically collapsed before the clock ran down to zero. 
Thankfully, Canonical also decided to hold a real press event in London 
today for its big announcement.<br />

And what did that turn out to be, pray tell? As expected, Canonical 
revealed that it has developed a touchscreen-based version of its free 
Ubuntu Linux-based OS. The new version was made specifically for both 
high end and budget smartphones. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/02/ubuntu-for-smartphones/">Engadget reports</a> that a version of the OS was demoed on a Galaxy Nexus smartphone at the press event.<br />
<br />
The main difference between Ubuntu and other touchscreen mobile 
operating systems is that it apparently uses edge swipes a lot more than
 just buttons like iOS and Android. Canonical claims " ... thumb 
gestures from all four edges of the screen enable users to find content 
and switch between apps faster than other phones." In some ways, this 
makes the Ubuntu smartphone OS similar to Windows 8 in terms of its 
interaction.<br />
<br />
Canonical is pushing for this new version of Ubuntu to be installed on 
smartphones for enterprise markets, and employees in theory could have 
one OS that will work with PCs, smartphones and servers. However, 
Canonical made no announcements on which smartphone makers or carriers 
will begin to sell Ubuntu-based phones.<br />

While the US Congress was debating whether or not the government should
 go over the "fiscal cliff" last week, the US Department of Defense 
quietly issued a press release late on Friday that confirmed that parts 
of the military will be using a lot of new and upcoming Microsoft 
software products over the next few years.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.defense.gov//news/newsarticle.aspx?id=118887">The announcement confirmed</a> that the DoD has signed a new three year software contract with Microsoft worth $617 million. The press release stated:<br />

Under the agreement, the Army, Air Force and DISA (Defense Information 
Systems Agency) can begin using the newest versions of Microsoft 
products, including Microsoft Office 2013, SharePoint 2013 and Windows

and content management tools.The package has been customized to meet the
 specific security needs of the Defense Department.</blockquote>
While $617 million sounds like a lot of money (and, well, it is), the 
DoD claims this new contract is the best price it has received from 
Microsoft compared to earlier agreements. The US Army says it will save 
$70 million a year for each of the three years the contract is in place.<br />
